| Plot |
| Only the central characters of "Indecent Proposal", David and Diana Murphy (Demi Moore, Wood Harrelson) seem not to know that selling sex is catastrophic to a marriage. David is a struggling young architect, better at design than business, and the couple is teetering on financial ruin unless they can build his latest project. They meet an extremely wealthy man, John Gage (Robert Redford), who is instantly attracted to Diana. Gage observes their need for cash and he makes the indecent offer. He will pay the couple for a million dollars in cash immediately, but what he wants to buy is the company of Diana and her sexual favors for a one night stand. David and Diana agonize over the shocking offer but seem too clueless to resist and agree to take the money. Diana sleeps with Gage, and they have the money. No panacea, the money becomes as meaningless and cold as the marriage. Gage, an essentially amoral creature who buys women as a game, admits that he has done this same thing several times before. He wins and loses Diana in a “happy” ending that is not even as plausible as the million dollar offer. |
