| Plot |
| Catherine (Gwyneth Platrow) is a young woman who is about to turn twenty-seven. She has spent the last few years living with and taking care of her aging father Robert (Anthony Hopkins), who is an incredibly brilliant former mathematics professor. He has contributed volumes to the field of mathematics with his ingenious proofs. However, he is also mentally unstable, requiring Catherine's constant supervision and care. Upon his death, Catherine's sister Claire comes home to settle matters and Hal (Jake Gyllenhaal), a former student of Robert's, volunteers to go through the hundreds of notebooks Robert left behind. Most of them are pure gibberish due to Robert's deteriorating mental state in the last years of his life, but is it possible that there is a mathematical breakthrough somewhere in the notebooks? |
