| Plot |
| When Terry Ann Wolfmeyer (Joan Allen) announces to her four daughters that their father, her husband, has left them for “his Swedish secretary,” that begins a downward spiral into intense bitterness, anger and heavy drinking to try and cope with her loss. Neighbor Denny Davies (Kevin Costner), a washed-up big-leaguer who’s making ends meet by signing baseballs, opening mall stores, and hosting a radio call-in show on a local station, is initially a commiserating drinking buddy for her, but over time becomes a confidant, a source of emotional support, and the other half of a rather tentative romance. He helps her through her family’s life storms over the following few years, including eldest daughter, Hadley’s (Alicia Witt) surprise wedding, head-strong Andy’s (Erika Christensen) ill-advised affair with Denny’s on-air producer, Shep Goodman (Mike Binder), budding ballerina Emily’s (Keri Russell) reluctance to capitulate to her mother’s wishes that she “be more practical,” and youngest daughter Popeye’s (Evan Rachel Wood) teenage trails and tribulations which include a school-girl crush on her gay best friend, Gorden (Dane Christensen). Nothing could prepare her, however, for a surprising discovery which changes her feelings, perspective, and outlook and alters the course of her life in ways she never could have seen coming. |
